Black Hills National Forest
Covering a rugged mountain island rising above the western plains in Pennington, Custer, and Lawrence counties. Dense ponderosa pine timber, aspen draws, and high meadows support famous herds of Rocky Mountain elk, mountain whitetail deer, mule deer, and Merriam's wild turkey.

Buffalo Gap & Fort Pierre National Grasslands
Vast expanses of native mixed-grass prairie, rolling breaks, and prairie dog towns. Renowned for wide-open spot-and-stalk hunting for pronghorn antelope, mule deer, sharp-tailed grouse, and greater prairie-chicken, with limitless backcountry camping and vehicle access.

South Dakota Walk-In Area (WIA) Program
The cornerstone of South Dakota's pheasant hunting heritage. Enrolls over 1.4 million private acres of unharvested food plots, CRP shelterbelts, and cattail sloughs. Open for free public foot hunting for ring-necked pheasant, sharp-tailed grouse, waterfowl, and whitetail deer.

Prairie Pothole Game Production Areas (GPAs)
Located across eastern South Dakota's glaciated pothole country. Hundreds of state-owned GPAs protect permanent cattail sloughs, prairie potholes, and native grass nesting cover. Legendary for late-season rooster pheasant drives, mallard and pintail decoy shoots, and heavy-racked prairie whitetail bucks.

Missouri River Breaks & Lake Oahe GPAs
Stretching along the Missouri River reservoir chain from Mobridge down through Pierre and Chamberlain. Rugged badland bluffs, willow bars, and cottonwood bottomlands provide exceptional public hunting for whitetail deer, mule deer, Canada geese, mallards, and wild turkeys.
