White-Tailed Deer
Abundant throughout Louisiana, with prime trophy genetics occurring in the nutrient-dense batture lands and alluvial bottomlands along the Mississippi, Red, and Atchafalaya rivers.

American Alligator
Louisiana holds the highest alligator population in the United States, with nearly 3 million wild and farm-raised gators thriving in the bayous, coastal marshes, and cypress-tupelo swamps of the southern parishes.

Louisiana Black Bear
A unique subspecies of the American black bear (Ursus americanus luteolus), famously linked to President Theodore Roosevelt's 1902 hunt that inspired the 'Teddy Bear'. Successfully recovered through extensive hardwood corridor restoration in the Tensas and Atchafalaya basins.

Feral Hog
Highly prolific non-native game mammal found across pine flatwoods, river bottoms, and coastal marshes. Adult boars root through wetland vegetation and provide year-round hunting.

Swamp Rabbit (Cane-Cutter)
Large, strong-swimming lagomorph native to flooded bottomlands, cypress swamps, and canebrakes. Frequently swims across bayous and sluggish bayou creeks to evade predators.

American Woodcock
Louisiana is the premier wintering destination for woodcock in the Central and Mississippi flyways. Tens of thousands of birds winter in the damp thickets and briar tangles of the Atchafalaya Basin.

Northern Bobwhite Quail
Associated with longleaf pine savannas and early-successional scrub in central and northern Louisiana parishes, feeding on native seeds and insects.

Eastern Gray & Fox Squirrel
Immensely popular small game species. Gray squirrels ('cat squirrels') dominate bottomland cypress-tupelo timber, while large fox squirrels inhabit upland pine ridges.
