White-tailed Deer

Louisiana deer hunting is deeply intertwined with the fertile bottomland hardwood forests, alluvial river plains, and cypress-tupelo bayous of the Sportsman's Paradise.

Louisiana Department of Wildlife and Fisheries (LDWF) manages deer across ten distinct deer areas, with rut timing spanning from October in the southwest marshes to late January along the Mississippi River. The Tensas River basin in northeastern Louisiana is the crown jewel of the state, consistently producing heavy-horned Boone & Crockett bucks. Public access abounds across sprawling Wildlife Management Areas (WMAs) like Tensas River NWR, Dewey Wills, and Richard K. Yancey.

American Alligator
World Capital of Alligator Harvest

American Alligator

Louisiana is the undisputed alligator capital of North America, harvesting more wild alligators annually than any other state through sustainable coastal wetland management.

LDWF divides the state into East and West Alligator Hunting Zones for the September harvest. Non-landowner hunters apply for public lottery tags on state WMAs and coastal refuges. Licensed hunters set traditional baited hook-and-line sets suspended from marsh poles, patrolling waterways at dawn in flat-bottom pirogues and mud boats to harvest giant gators.

Eastern Wild Turkey
Hardwood Swamp Strutters

Eastern Wild Turkey

Louisiana's wild turkey populations reside in the mixed pine-hardwood hills and river drainages of central and northern Louisiana, alongside the Florida Parishes.

LDWF conducts a three-week spring season in April. Public WMAs such as Kisatchie National Forest and Fort Polk offer challenging wilderness hunting for cautious gobblers through rolling longleaf pine hills and hardwood creek bottoms.

Wild Boar / Feral Hog
Marsh & Swamp Hogs

Wild Boar / Feral Hog

Feral hogs inhabit every parish in Louisiana, thriving in remote coastal marsh islands, river swamps, and bottomland forests. Hogs may be taken year-round on private lands with liberal methods, including nighttime hunting with artificial light and thermal optics.
