Roosevelt Elk
Western Oregon's Coast Range and Cascade Mountains support premier populations of giant Roosevelt elk. These thick-timber titans navigate dense fern jungles, salal brush, and steep Douglas fir forests.
Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife (ODFW) offers general archery and controlled rifle hunts. Archery hunting during the September bugle in the Siuslaw and Tioga units provides high-adrenaline close-quarters calling encounters in dense coastal fog.

Rocky Mountain Elk
In the rugged northeastern corner of Oregon—anchored by the Blue Mountains, Wallowa Mountains, and Eagle Cap Wilderness—ODFW manages trophy Rocky Mountain elk herds.
Controlled draw units like Wenaha, Mt. Emily, and Chesnimnus produce world-class 360-to-390+ inch bulls with heavy antler mass. Backpacking into remote wilderness canyons yields classic western elk hunting.

Columbia Black-Tailed Deer
Western Oregon is the heartland of Columbia blacktail hunting. These ghost-like deer thrive in the dense understory of the Willamette Valley margins and coastal mountain ranges.
Hunters utilize tree stands over apple orchards and clearcut edges, or still-hunt through soaking wet timber during the November late-season rut.

Mule Deer
Eastern Oregon's sagebrush basins, rimrock canyons, and ponderosa pine forests support mule deer hunting managed exclusively by ODFW controlled draw.
Top units span the Steens Mountain, Hart Mountain, and Trout Creek mountains. Hunters glass open desert ridges at first light to locate heavy-antlered bucks before they bed in mountain mahogany thickets.

Pronghorn Antelope
The arid sage flats and playa lake basins of southeastern Oregon host healthy pronghorn herds. ODFW allocates limited archery, muzzleloader, and rifle tags for spot-and-stalk hunting across expansive public BLM lands.

Bighorn Sheep
Oregon is home to both Rocky Mountain bighorns (in the Hells Canyon and Wallowa country) and California bighorns (patrolling the sheer basalt rims of the Owyhee and Steens mountain country). Tags are distributed via ODFW's coveted once-in-a-lifetime draw.
